Design Brief

In the design brief, I outlined the scope and identified basic elements of the project, including the defined problem, relevant secondary research that supports the idea, proposed solution, target users of my app and a brief competitive audit that introduces and analyzes similar products in the market.

Over 150,000 people a year could be dying unnecessarily because first aid is not widely known enough.

A 2018 research shows that only 5% of adults have the skills and confidence to provide first aid in emergency situations.

Problem

Many people have insufficient knowledge about first aid, limited access to relevant tools and equipment, and common concerns around performing it, which result in a lack of first-aid actions and a waste of life-saving chances.

Secondary Research

First aid is critical to saving lives if it is performed timely and correctly.

More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital each year. CPR, especially if administered immediately after cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

People are facing worries and obstacles in performing first aid.

Reasons that stop people from performing first aid include unwillingness to be sued, hurting a victim, catching a disease or making a mistake, etc.

Misunderstandings of first aid persist.

Some of the misconceptions include the wrong estimation of the learning cost, or simply the belief that friends and family will always be safe and healthy.

Proposed Solution

To create an app that offers quick access to first aid supplies and materials, provides clear guidance and resources for users to handle emergencies, and motivates them to partake in fun and easy online trainings.

Target Users

First aid can be useful and meaningful to anyone regardless of their gender, race, education or occupation. The only concerns around young children learning and performing first aid are their relative weakness in physical strength and maturity to handle technical concepts.

The ideal users for this app would be people above age 13 who wishes to acquire more knowledge, skills and resources in relation to first aid.

Offline Survival Manual

Offline Survival Manual is one of the interesting first aid apps. The app has guides on building fires, plant identification, water filtration, food, planning, and other stuff. Part of that includes basic first aid for injuries or illnesses you may encounter in the outdoors.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross has several first aid apps. They range from the basics on down to a first aid app for pets. The information includes basically everything from allergic reactions to burns, bleeding, heat stroke, asphyxiation, and other potential emergencies.

St John Ambulance

St John Ambulance First Aid is another one of many free first aid apps. It has relatively up-to-date procedures for dozens of emergencies, including drowning, poisoning, choking, and other common ailments. It's not as in-depth as a course or a manual.
